Vigor: The R2E2 is a medium-to-highly vigorous tree. It grows very quickly in its first few years.

Canopy: It has an upright, open canopy which allows for good sunlight penetration but makes the branches somewhat brittle.

Climate: While it thrives in tropical and subtropical regions, it is noted for being slightly more cold-tolerant than other varieties once established.

Season: Generally a mid-season variety. In Australia, harvest typically occurs from October to February.

Why It’s Popular
The R2E2 was specifically bred to overcome the shortcomings of other varieties for the export market. Its thick skin and firm flesh give it an excellent shelf life (up to 2–3 weeks if handled correctly), allowing it to be shipped long distances without bruising or spoiling. Today, it accounts for a massive portion of Australian mango exports and is widely grown in Vietnam and Thailand.
