Nam Dok Mai Si Muang Purple Mango Description

The Nam Dok Mai Si Muang (also spelled Si Muang or Sree Muang) is a rare and visually stunning variation of the classic Thai Nam Dok Mai mango. While the traditional Nam Dok Mai is known for its golden-yellow skin, the "Si Muang" variety is famous for its deep purple to violet skin.

Below is a detailed description of this exotic fruit:

1. Appearance and Color
Skin: The most striking feature. When young, the fruit starts with a purplish-green tint, which matures into a rich, dark purple or deep violet hue. It often has a light waxy bloom and small speckles.

Flesh: Despite the purple exterior, the internal flesh is a vibrant golden-yellow.

Shape: It maintains the classic Nam Dok Mai shape—elongated and oval with a prominent "beak" at the tip.

2. Flavor and Texture
Taste: It is exceptionally sweet with a rich, honey-like flavor and delicate floral notes (often compared to the scent of daffodils or jasmine).

Sweetness: It has a very high sugar content, typically measuring between 22

  and 25

  Brix.

Texture: The flesh is completely fibreless, giving it a buttery, "melt-in-your-mouth" consistency that is highly prized by gourmet chefs.

Seed: It has a very thin, flat seed (polyembryony), which means you get a high ratio of edible flesh per fruit.

3. Tree and Growth Characteristics
Size: A medium-sized evergreen tree that can reach over 6 meters (20 feet) if left unpruned. However, it is often kept smaller (around 2-3 meters) in home gardens.

Adaptability: It is well-suited for tropical and subtropical climates (USDA zones 9–11). It can be grown in large containers or "grow bags" for terrace gardening.

Fruiting: Grafted trees are early producers, often bearing fruit within 2 to 3 years of planting. It is an early-to-midseason variety and may even produce multiple crops a year in ideal conditions.

4. Culinary Uses
Fresh Eating: Best enjoyed sliced fresh or chilled.

Thai Desserts: It is the premier choice for Mango Sticky Rice (Khao New Mauna) due to its lack of fiber.

Beverages: Ideal for smoothies, lassis, and juices because of its smooth texture.
