1. Physical Appearance
Size & Shape: Medium-sized and slightly flattened at the top and bottom (oblate shape).

Exterior: The rind is thin, pockmarked, and "loose-jacketed," meaning it can be peeled by hand without much effort.

Color: The skin transitions from a yellowish-green to a vibrant deep orange as it ripens.

Interior: The pulp is tender, saffron-colored, and typically contains a few seeds that are pointed at one end.

2. Flavor & Aroma
The "Sugar-Acid" Blend: Unlike varieties that are purely sweet, the Nagpur orange is prized for its balanced acidity. This unique sweet-tangy profile is its defining characteristic.

Fragrance: It has a highly aromatic, citrusy scent, thanks to a high concentration of essential oils in the rind.

3. Harvest Cycles (The Two Seasons)
Nagpur oranges are unique because they blossom twice a year, resulting in two distinct crops: | Crop Name | Harvest Period | Flavor Profile | | :--- | :--- | :--- | | Ambiya Bahar | Sept – Dec | Slightly more tart/tangy; great for juicing. | | Mrig Bahar | Jan – March | Much sweeter and juicier; often considered the superior crop. |

4. Cultural & Geographical Significance
GI Tag: In 2014, the Nagpur orange was awarded the Geographical Indication (GI) status. This legally protects the name, ensuring that only oranges grown in the specific soil and climate of the Vidarbha region can be marketed as "Nagpur Oranges."

Soil (Terroir): The fruit's unique taste is attributed to the region’s black clay soil and its hot, sub-humid tropical climate.

Origin: Interestingly, it isn't native to Nagpur; it was brought from Aurangabad in the 18th century by the Bhonsle dynasty and flourished in the local environment.

5. Nutrition & Usage
Health: Exceptionally high in Vitamin C, fiber, and antioxidants.

Culinary: While mostly eaten fresh (table fruit), it is also used for juice concentrates, marmalades, and local delicacies like Orange Barfi.
